“Structural engineers always over design things.” I have heard this phrase so many times in my career, primarily from contractors and sometimes clients.  Usually, it is when they are looking at a large beam or a thick piece of steel. Structural engineers often get then reputation that they are too conservative and over design everything.
There seems to be a fair amount of misunderstanding regarding what the purpose of these materials are and where they are found on a building. First, it is important to note that these materials are just part of a system that makes up a control layer on a building. Each control layer is intended to perform a certain function.
Today, July 12, marks the first day of operations for Carlson Structural Engineering, Inc, and the excitement is palpable. I am looking forward to continuing to do what I love and do best; helping clients solve their engineering related problems. This is what I have done for over 32 years and it has been so much fun that it never seemed like work.
